FAQ's Training Gardener
For an apprenticeship as a gardener*in - specializing in gardening and landscaping, they must meet the following requirements:
- You have at least the qualifying secondary school diploma
- You successfully participate in an interview with practical test at the city of Erlangen
In addition, you should show the willingness to work outdoors every day and in all weather conditions. Noise and dirt on construction sites, as well as physical work are no problem for you. A quick apprehension as well as flexibility at work is a matter of course for you. You like to take responsibility for your tasks and are committed to them. You are not a lone wolf - rather you enjoy working in a team.
Gardener*in with the specialization gardening and landscaping is a recognized profession according to the Vocational Training Act (BBiG). The dual vocational training at the city of Erlangen lasts 3 years. Theoretical training sections take place at the vocational school in Nuremberg or in Höchstädt a. d. Donau. These alternate with practical training periods at the City of Erlangen's Municipal Greenery, Waste Management and Street Cleaning Department. In addition, you will deepen your practical skills in inter-company courses at DEULA Bayern GmbH in Freising.
Theoretical training
In the first year of your training, you will attend the State Vocational School in Nuremberg in blocks. The theoretical training in the second and third year of training takes place at the State Vocational School Center in Höchstädt on the Danube. During the school blocks in Höchstädt an der Donau, you will be accommodated in a dormitory. The content of the theoretical training focuses on, among other things:
- Botany
- Soil science
- Fertilizer science
- Plant protection
- Technology
- Plant and variety science
- Business basics of labor law and social insurance
The trainees must pass an intermediate examination and at the end of the training the final examination. The final exam consists of a practical, a written and an oral part.
In vocational school, school assignments and extemporals are written, as well as oral quizzes.

Vocational training
In-company training takes place at the City of Erlangen mainly in the company for urban greenery, waste management and street cleaning in the urban greenery department and is supplemented by inter-company courses at the vocational training center of DEULA Bayern GmbH in Freising.
You will be deployed mainly with the various squads of the green space maintenance department and will work on construction sites throughout the city. Within this framework, you will be introduced to areas of responsibility such as construction and vegetation work and systematically familiarized with the contents of the job.
A healthy feedback culture is emphasized at the City of Erlangen: you will receive regular feedback on strengths and weaknesses so that you always know how you can actively develop further in order to expand and enhance your skills. The goal is always to prepare you for your future employment after your training.
During your training you will receive a monthly training allowance (gross)
- in the 1st year in the amount of 1,068.26€
- in the 2nd year in the amount of 1,118.20€
- in the 3rd year in the amount of 1,164.02€
The training allowance is based on the collective agreement for trainees in the public service (TVAöD).
In addition, as a trainee*r of the City of Erlangen, you are entitled to capital-forming benefits in the amount of € 13.29 per month and a special annual payment ("Christmas bonus").
After successfully completing the final examination, you can also expect a graduation bonus in the amount of € 400.
After the training, the remuneration is based on the collective agreement for the public service (TVöD). The grouping and thus also the remuneration takes place according to the activity, which is taken over. The performance principle applies. The law therefore provides for certain grouping criteria. If an employee holds a position and fulfills all job characteristics, the classification is made according to the previously determined job evaluation.
The starting salary is currently € 2576.29 (gross) in the lowest pay group EG 05, level 1.
In addition, you will also receive capital-forming benefits and a special payment ("Christmas bonus"). In addition, you can expect regular salary increases and performance-related steps.

As part of the training, all fees are borne by the City of Erlangen.
In addition, in the case of inter-company training courses that take place outside the company for urban greenery, waste management and street cleaning of the City of Erlangen, you will be reimbursed for travel expenses.
Also, there is a free provision of work clothes and training materials that are required for vocational training and to take the exam. In addition, you will receive a subsidy of €50 for learning materials in each training year.
You will be prepared as part of your training for later work in the company for urban greenery, waste management and street cleaning, where you will also be deployed after being taken over.
