You will perform important public tasks in the wastewater treatment plant of the city of Erlangen and actively work for the citizens*. You will also make a significant contribution to climate and environmental protection, as wastewater treatment ensures good water quality in our water bodies. The gas storage tanks and solar cells of our modern wastewater treatment plant are also crucial in ensuring that the entire plant can cover its own electricity and water needs.
As a wastewater technology specialist, you will process wastewater in the wastewater treatment plant and learn how to control, maintain, and care for the wastewater treatment plant.
In addition, you will monitor the treatment stages to optimize the wastewater treatment process, analyze the wastewater and sewage sludge samples, and document the results. In the case of automated plants and machines, it is your task to control these and to take immediate corrective action in the event of deviations.

For an apprenticeship as a specialist for wastewater technology, you must meet the following requirements:
- You have at least the qualifying secondary school diploma.
- You successfully participate in an interview with practical test at the city of Erlangen
Specialist for wastewater technology is a recognized profession according to the Vocational Training Act (BBiG). The dual training at the City of Erlangen lasts 3 years. It is divided into theoretical training at the state vocational school in Lauingen and practical training at the drainage company of the city of Erlangen.
In addition, the training is supplemented by inter-company courses and additional courses, e.g. at the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) and at the BVS-Bildungszentrum in Lauingen with various topics.
Specialized theoretical training
The theoretical training takes place in blocks at the state vocational school in Lauingen. Here you will learn subject-specific content such as electrical engineering or environmental analysis and build the theoretical foundation for your practical work. In addition to purely vocational content in subjects such as wastewater technology, you will also have lessons in general education subjects such as German and social studies.

Vocational training
The practical part of your training will mainly take place at the drainage company of the city of Erlangen. During your training, you will be introduced to the various fields of activity and systematically familiarized with the contents of the job. Here you will have the opportunity to practically apply, consolidate and deepen what you have learned in vocational school.
You will learn, for example, how to operate and maintain the drainage systems.
In addition, you will learn how to examine wastewater and sludge and how to clean wastewater mechanically, biologically and chemically.
During your practical training, you will be supervised by competent instructors* who will give you an insight into the various tasks and everyday life as a wastewater technology specialist and will also gradually give you the opportunity to take on these tasks independently.
A healthy feedback culture is a priority at the City of Erlangen: you will receive feedback on strengths and weaknesses so that you always know how you can actively develop further in order to build on and expand your skills.
During your training you will receive a monthly training allowance (gross)
- In the first year: 1,068.26 euros
- In the second year: 1,118.20 euros
- In the third year: 1,164.02 euros
The training allowance is based on the collective agreement for trainees in the public service (TVAöD).
In addition, as a trainee*r of the City of Erlangen, you are entitled to capital-forming benefits in the amount of € 13.29 per month and a special annual payment ("Christmas bonus").
After successful completion of the final examination, you can also expect a graduation bonus in the amount of € 400.
After completion of the training, the remuneration is based on the collective agreement for the public service (TVöD). The grouping and thus also the remuneration take place according to the activity, which is taken over. The performance principle applies. The law therefore provides for certain grouping criteria. If an employee has a position and fulfills all job characteristics, the classification is made according to the previously determined job evaluation.
The starting salary is currently € 2,683.45 (gross) in the pay group EG 06, level 1.
In addition, you will also receive capital-forming benefits and a special payment (Christmas bonus). In addition, you can expect regular salary increases and performance-related steps.

.As part of the training, all fees are paid by the City of Erlangen.
For inter-company training courses that take place outside the drainage company, you will also be reimbursed for travel expenses. In the case of an overnight training course, the City of Erlangen will cover the costs of room and board.
Working materials such as books or work and protective clothing will also be covered by the City of Erlangen. In addition, you will receive a subsidy of €50 for learning materials in each training year.
You will be employed in dewatering operations. As a wastewater engineering specialist, you will do a lot of work outdoors, in the lab, in machine shops, in basements, and occasionally in the office.
