100 years of Siemens in Erlangen

Stand: 21.07.2025

Sep/Oct 2025 Exhibition sheds light on the relationship between the city and the company that began in 1925 and shaped Erlangen like few other aspects of its history

Exhibition in the city archive, September 15 to October 15, 2025

Additional program: City tour on 21 September 2025, at 11 am

In 1925, Siemens & Halske from Berlin acquired the majority of shares in INAG, a holding company that included Erlangen-based Reiniger, Gebbert & Schall Aktiengesellschaft. This purchase marked the first connection between Siemens and the city of Erlangen. Siemens & Halske AG in Berlin relocated parts of its production to Erlangen. In 1932, the Erlangen medical technology production was then renamed Siemens-Reiniger-Werke AG. In 1945, the headquarters of other Siemens branches were also relocated from Berlin to Erlangen - the Franconian city was largely undestroyed and the company was already based here.

Siemens thus became the largest employer in the city. Like few other cities, Erlangen has grown enormously to this day - both in terms of space and population. The municipality benefited from the prospering company headquarters and the newcomers - at the same time, the infrastructure and living space had to be expanded enormously within a short space of time. The encounter between the Franconian spirit and initially the "Prussian" city dwellers, later "Siemensians" from all over the world, was and is not always smooth.

The intertwining of city and company over the last 100 years is the subject of a cabinet exhibition in the Erlangen City Archive, which will be on display from September 15 to October 15. On September 21, there will also be a special city tour on the history of Erlangen and Siemens. At the end, there will be a free visit to the exhibition in the rooms of the Erlangen City Archive, Luitpoldstraße 47 - a former Siemens cleaner building.

Visiting the exhibition and participating in the city tour are free of charge.
