Motion by the Sustainability Advisory Board on the consolidation list
Stand: 24.04.2025
Cancellation of the lease for the reading café should be withdrawn.
At its last meeting, the Sustainability Advisory Board decided by a majority to submit a motion to withdraw the cancellation of the lease for the reading café. The motion was submitted to the City Council as a motion by the Lord Mayor and is on the agenda of the City Council meeting on April 30 under item 19.
The motion:
The Sustainability Advisory Board of the City of Erlangen requests the withdrawal of proposal no. 15/ Office 24 "End of a lease" (premises vhs/ reading café) and its removal from the list of the so-called consolidation check Unit VI.
Justification:
The rooms of the vhs, which are managed by the Lesecafé Anständig Essen e.V., offer the urban community a fixed point of contact for education for sustainable development, nutrition and health education. The association's offer also supports the city in implementing its climate change goals and offers a low-threshold range of necessary transformation knowledge that is independent of events. The vhs' public image in the city is strengthened by the reading café and the focus on sustainability is credibly represented.
Even more important for both urban society and climate protection, however, is its function as a meeting place and multiplier address for a lively club life. The Lesecafé - which has grown organically and is made possible by civic engagement - supports voluntary structures that have a far-reaching impact on urban society, complement and strengthen the city's efforts and, not least, save costs for urban society.
The work of the reading café can largely compensate for the lack of a city center community center. The shortage of affordable space for club life and public (educational) events is largely compensated for with the Lesecafé and the sensible multiple use of space is realized. With the end of the lease, the city would lose the only place in the city center where transformation and
tangible and tangible for urban society. But it would also lose a large part of the voluntary commitment to climate protection.
