ENG: New chemistry wing and five new classrooms

At the Emmy-Noether Gymnasium (ENG) in Bruck, a new building is being constructed on the site of the former teachers' parking lot to house the chemistry wing, five additional classrooms, and an open learning space on the upper floor.

This measure is necessary due to rising student enrollment at the high schools in Erlangen and the return to the G9 system in Bavaria. The Emmy-Noether Gymnasium was selected to make up for the shortfall. In the future, approximately 1,000 students will be taught in 40 classes.

The new building is scheduled to be completed by the start of the school year in September 2027. To meet the tight deadlines and due to the limited budget, the city administration handled the design and permitting phases—as well as the request for proposals in the form of functional specifications—in-house. By mid-August, the structural shell will be completed after just two weeks of construction during the summer break.

Turnkey Construction

The contract for the expansion project was awarded at the end of February 2026 to a general contractor using a modular construction system (turnkey execution, including shop and on-site assembly planning). A high degree of prefabrication significantly reduces the disruption to school operations caused by construction activities.

The contract for the turnkey construction project was awarded to Goldbeck, which uses a modular construction system consisting of steel columns and reinforced concrete wall and floor slabs. The components are manufactured in the factory regardless of weather conditions, erected on site, and the building is then fully finished.

Two-Story New Building

The new two-story building (without a basement) will provide approximately 700 square meters of additional gross floor area, including unisex restrooms as well as storage and utility spaces, as requested by the school. The extension is connected to the existing school building via an open, covered pergola. An elevator will be installed to ensure barrier-free access to the new building.

The roof will be designed as a retention roof with extensive greening. Any excess rainwater will be collected on-site in infiltration basins. Green facades are also planned. The new building will be heated by its own air-to-water heat pump. A photovoltaic system with a peak output of approximately 38 kW will be installed on the roof. Ventilation in the classrooms of the new building will be provided by decentralized ventilation systems.

The total project costs amount to approximately 5.8 million euros (including about 560,000 euros for school equipment). The project will be funded by an FAG grant of an estimated 2.23 million euros. In addition, funding of approximately 70,000 euros is expected from the KfW program “Climate-Friendly New Construction – Municipalities – Non-Residential Buildings.”
