The City of Erlangen Warns of Fraudulent Invoice Emails

The City of Erlangen is warning against receiving fraudulent emails that are currently being sent to the city’s business partners. In the cases identified so far, the following email address was used (rechnung@economic-department.com). The emails ask recipients to provide billing information.
The city clarifies: These emails do not originate from the Erlangen City Administration, its departments, or its affiliated companies. They are in no way connected to the City of Erlangen.
Official email addresses of the city administration always end in @stadt.erlangen.de.
The city asks businesses, business partners, and residents not to reply to these messages and not to disclose any personal information, billing information, or login credentials.
Anyone who has received such an email is asked to forward it as an attachment to stadt@stadt.erlangen.de with the subject line “Information Security – Attempted Invoice Fraud.” The City of Erlangen will investigate the reported cases and file a police report.
The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) recommends a “3-Second Security Check”:
1. Check the sender
Is the sender known? Do the displayed name and the full email address match?
2. Question the subject line
Does the subject line make sense? Are you actually expecting an invoice or another request from this sender?
3. Check attachments and links
Are you expecting an attachment? Do not open unexpected files or click on links without verifying them first.
