The Erlangen BIO Day

Stand: 28.05.2024

The Erlangen BIO Day takes place annually as part of the Erlangen Autumn. Next date: October 19, 2024

The 2023 program was as follows:

The organic city of Erlangen introduces itself: A street festival full of delights with stalls all about regional - organic - fair. We will show you what Erlangen has to offer in terms of sustainable and climate-friendly organic food! Get to know local companies and initiatives, try organic and fair delicacies and talk to organic pioneers. Numerous hands-on and prize draws, stands with seasonal delicacies to sample and tips on regional shopping opportunities await you!

A diverse potpourri of stalls welcomes you to Wasserturmstraße: Enjoy organic wine, organic beer or non-alcoholic cocktails in the street café and have inspiring conversations with active members of the Nutrition Forum of the Sustainability Advisory Board and the Lesecafé. Or enjoy a taste of autumnal pumpkin soup in the organic gastronomy area and experience the organic baker live at work - taste the brand new Erlangen organic kuchen for the first time on the Genussmeile. A whole range of local organic producers and farm stores, as well as special agricultural marketing associations such as Solawi, Marktschwärmer and Abokiste will tempt you to buy organic fruit and vegetables and other seasonal products such as goat's cheese, eggs and cereal products. The idea of organic Christmas trees from the region will be presented on a tractor.

The food rescuers will also be on site and can report on whether there are also approaches to sharing in the organic sector. In keeping with the motto "think globally, act locally", you can find out about fair trade organic products from all over the world. You can also find out all about sustainable citizen shares with responsibility for the organic farming and food industry and regional value creation in Franconia or about regional organic products for bulk consumers.

For families with children there will be hands-on activities and wind turbines, and for all guests there will be an organic quiz with a prize draw for organic-fair bags filled with organic products at 2 pm. At the Biostadt Erlangen stand, you will receive various information material and organic addresses for your next purchase and can marvel at the colorful harvest of the Zukunftsacker - directly from the field to your plate. And of course there is much more to discover - let yourself be surprised!

The city of Erlangen joined the German Organic Cities Network in 2017 by resolution of the city council and has officially been an organic city ever since. The following goals are associated with this:

  • Promote organic farming, processing and demand for organic food with short transportation routes and regional added value
  • Give priority to organic food at public institutions, events and markets
  • Focus on healthy organic food, especially when providing meals for children and young people in daycare centers and schools
  • Inspire private consumers as well as company canteens, catering companies and the food service industry to go organic through a variety of campaigns
  • Networking the organic sector and cooperating with organic farmers and organic businesses
  • Take a holistic view of organic as part of sustainability and consider aspects such as regionality & fair trade, climate & environmental protection, animal welfare & veggie/vegan and food waste & zero waste. In addition to food, include other product areas such as natural cosmetics, organic drugstore goods and organic textiles, etc.

The objectives were also taken up in the Climate Awakening Roadmap and the measures "Climate and environmentally friendly catering", "Regional and organic food network" and "Establishment of a food council" were formulated.

Working together to make agriculture suitable for grandchildren, securing regional food and ensuring fair supply chains contributes to the global sustainability goals at local level and promotes "sustainable consumption and production" (SDG 12), "zero hunger" (SDG 2) and "decent work" (SDG 8).
