Book presentation "Nazi 'euthanasia' in Franconia"

Stand: 25.08.2025

Cooperation project between the city archives and the Institute for the History and Ethics of Medicine at FAU presents research findings on the sanatorium and nursing home during the Nazi era.

On November 18, 2024, the Harald zur Hausen lecture hall was the venue for the book launch of the research project on Nazi "euthanasia" in Franconia. Lord Mayor Florian Janik also attended the event.

The Erlangen sanatorium and nursing home was the site of "euthanasia" crimes during the Nazi era. Over 900 disabled and mentally ill people were taken from here to killing centers, and many hundreds more fell victim to the so-called "starvation diet" and structural neglect in the later years of the war. This volume presents the first results of a multi-year joint research project by the Institute for the History and Ethics of Medicine at FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg and the Erlangen City Archives. On the basis of a systematic survey of archive sources, most of which have not yet been analyzed, the events behind the walls of the institution were examined in their medical, communal and public context.

This book is not only available in bookshops (ISBN 978-3-412-52970-3), but has also been published in open access and can be downloaded free of charge from the publisher's website.
