Every year around Candlemas (February 2), the Candlemas market takes place on the Schloßplatz. Traditionally, you can find everything for the well-stocked household, textiles, spices and all kinds of tasty treats. A limited number of bars and snack bars, as well as a children's carousel, children's swing or similar with a length of up to eight meters are also permitted at the Lichtmessmarkt. The opening hours are Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, Saturday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Sunday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.

In 1694, Margrave Christian Ernst set two fairs for the new town of Erlangen on the Monday after the 2nd Sunday in Lent and the Monday after the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (later known as the Lichtmessmarkt or August Market). They were held in 1694 on the Holzmarkt (Hugenottenplatz) and from 1695 on the Schloßplatz. The spring fair was held on Candlemas (February 2) after 1708. The fair was combined with two horse and cattle markets, which lasted from Monday to Wednesday.
