Excerpt from the City Encyclopedia
In 1694, Margrave Christian Ernst established two annual fairs for Erlangen’s Neustadt district: one on the Monday after the second Sunday of Lent and one on the Monday after the Assumption of Mary (later known as the Candlemas Market and the August Market, respectively). In 1694, they were held at the Holzmarkt (Hugenottenplatz), and from 1695 onward, at the Schloßplatz. After 1708, the spring fair was held on Candlemas (February 2). The fair was combined with two horse and livestock markets, which lasted from Monday through Wednesday.
