ESTW Warns Against Fake Letters

The letter from DMG Deutsche Messwesen GmbH incorrectly suggests that electricity meters must be replaced with smart meters and that action should be taken as soon as possible. This is not the case.

Erlanger Stadtwerke (ESTW) is the primary metering point operator in the Erlangen municipal area in accordance with the Metering Point Operations Act (MsbG) and is therefore the point of contact for the replacement of an ESTW electricity meter. This means: You will receive official correspondence or information regarding a meter replacement exclusively directly from ESTW, never through unannounced third-party companies or general direct mail. ESTW expressly states that it has no affiliation with DMG Deutsche Messwesen GmbH or Metrify Smart Metering GmbH.

All households in Erlangen will receive a digital electricity meter—a so-called modern metering device—by 2032, but only from ESTW! This meter can display more than just the current reading; however, it cannot transmit data and must still be read manually. Smart metering systems, colloquially known as smart meters, consist of a modern metering device and an interface through which consumption data is transmitted to the utility provider. However, there is currently no requirement for private households to switch to a smart meter system.

There are exceptions; further information can be found at www.estw.de/dubiose_post and www.bundesnetzagentur.de/smart-meter. A subsidy mentioned in the letter, purportedly provided by the legislature, is intended to make the installation of smart meters more attractive. No such subsidy exists in this form!
