Project on female genital mutilation

The project "Strengthening human rights - countering FGM/C" is a cooperation between the Equal Opportunities Office of the City of Erlangen, the Equal Opportunities Office of Erlangen-Höchstadt and the Health Region plus ERH & ER.

"FGM/C" stands for "Female Genital Mutilation / Cutting", i.e. female genital mutilation and cutting. This human rights violation against girls and women is practiced in over 90 countries worldwide - although the practice is banned in many countries. In Germany, it is estimated that over 100,000 women and more than 17,000 girls at risk are now affected, and their health care is usually inadequate. The aim of the project is to improve care in the region. Several events are part of the project:


-> a two-part training course for psycho-social counseling specialists

-> a lecture at the Erlangen working group "Round Table on Violence"

-> "Finding the right words" - talking about female genital mutilation and circumcision on 30.10.2025, 7 pm in the city library

The topic of female genital mutilation, or FGM/C for short, is a very intimate one for those affected. General taboos and cultural differences can trigger insecurities and fears: What happens when the topic comes up in my own everyday life? How can I address it? What are the differences when talking about FGM/C with adult women, adolescents and parents of potentially at-risk girls? What can we do to strengthen child protection?
Those at risk and those affected must be seen. On this evening, we will approach the challenges using practical examples and look at how women and girls can be empowered.
