Young people can gain practical experience during a voluntary service, for example in social areas, sport, culture or abroad.
Overview of voluntary services
All citizens who have completed their compulsory full-time schooling can do a Federal Volunteer Service (BFD). This allows them to get involved, for example, in the social and cultural sector or in civil protection and disaster control. The BFD usually lasts one year.

During the Voluntary Ecological Year (FÖJ), young people can work for a year in a nature conservation and environmental protection or environmental education institution. In doing so, they gain their first professional experience and can bridge the gap until they start training or studying.

With the Voluntary Social Year (FSJ), young people can get a taste of social professions or the fields of sport, heritage conservation, politics and culture for several months. They get to know their own interests and skills and gain their first professional experience. The FSJ can be used to bridge the gap between studying and training.

Young people can take part in the International Youth Volunteer Service abroad with a German organization. They can work in the social or ecological sector, in peace and reconciliation work or in education, culture or sport. They can also gain intercultural experience and get to know their own strengths.

Young people can gain experience abroad for several months through the Kulturweit voluntary service. They work with a partner organization of the German foreign cultural and educational policy. A good knowledge of German is important for this.
