Commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the death of Josef Mayr-Nusser
Stand: 24.02.2025
80 years ago today, on February 24, 1945, Josef Mayr-Nusser from Bolzano died on his way to the concentration camp at Erlangen train station because he had previously refused to swear an oath to Adolf Hitler.
This history has now linked the cities of Bolzano and Erlangen for almost 10 years. On the 80th anniversary of Josef Mayr-Nusser's death, Mayor Renzo Caramaschi traveled to Erlangen with a delegation from Erlangen's twin city. In addition to the mayor, Christoph Buratti, the mayor's spokesman for cultural relations with the twin city of Erlangen and president of the local council, two other local councillors and several representatives of the Diocese of Bolzano-Bressanone and members of the Mayr family also came from Bolzano.
Together, city leaders Janik and Caramaschi laid a wreath at the first Mayr-Nusser grave in Erlangen's cemetery of honor. The Mayr family members present and the Diocese of Bolzano-Bressanone lit a candle with the inscription "1945 Zeugen sein 2025" ("1945 Witnesses 2025"). On the evening before, a memorial service was also held in the Herz Jesu parish church by Christoph Uttenreuther, vicar of Erlangen, and Reinhard Demetz, head of the Bolzano pastoral office.
The importance of commemorating Josef Mayr-Nusser for the citizens of Erlangen was demonstrated by the presence of members of the Freundeskreis Bozen as well as teachers and students from the Josef Mayr-Nusser Fachakademie für Sozialpädagogik from Baiersdorf. To continue the commemoration, a panel discussion with two speakers from Bolzano, among others, will take place on May 22 at the vhs-Erlangen on the topic "Remembering Josef Mayr-Nusser: the town twinning Erlangen-Bolzano"(here: registration possible). The event is free of charge and will be held in German.
