New annual calendar: The hyperinflation of 1923
Stand: 28.05.2024
The twelve pictures in the large-format monthly calendar 2023, published by PH.C.W.SCHMIDT and designed by the Erlangen City Archive, show Erlangen one hundred years ago.
In 1923, inflation in Germany reached an alarming peak. 160 billion marks were paid for a liter of beer in November of that year. With photographs of people, events, buildings and places in the city from this period, some of which were taken by well-known Erlangen photographers such as Simon Katz, Leonhard Bergmann and Johannes Junge, the calendar takes the viewer back to the difficult period after the First World War.
The backs of the calendar pages are also richly designed: Close-ups of coins, banknotes and emergency money from 1923 together with documentation of the dollar exchange rate and price trends illustrate the galloping inflation over the course of the year. Quotes from Erlangen newspapers provide an insight into city life, the difficult living conditions of Erlangen's citizens and the events of that year.
