City adjusts daycare fees and catering costs

Stand: 07.04.2025

The city of Erlangen is increasing the fees for municipal daycare facilities in two stages: They will rise by 25 percent for the 2025 and 2026 kindergarten years. The city council passed the resolution at its meeting on March 27.

Why are the fees being increased?

In recent years, Erlangen has invested heavily in the expansion and quality of childcare. At the same time, fees have hardly been adjusted and have been heavily subsidized. Currently, the municipal fees are significantly lower than those of independent providers or comparable Bavarian cities such as Ingolstadt, Fürth, Regensburg, Würzburg and Nuremberg.

Rising operating and personnel costs as well as the costs for healthy and high-quality catering are no longer covered. The municipal auditing association and independent providers have recommended an adjustment.

New contributions from 2025 and 2026 (sample calculation)

Childcare costs will increase in two stages:

  • Crèche (booking duration 5-6 hours): from the current 249 euros to 311 euros (2025) and 389 euros (2026)
  • Kindergarten (booking duration 6-7 hours, less 100 euros subsidy): from 39 euros to 74 euros (2025) and 118 euros (2026)
  • After-school care (booking duration 3-4 hours): from 102 euros to 128 euros (2025) and 160 euros (2026)

In addition, the cost of meals will be recalculated: Lunch will cost 62 euros per month in future. A snack allowance of 7 euros will ensure a healthy breakfast and afternoon snack.

Social cushioning and tax relief

Families on low incomes will benefit from tax relief. Those who receive social benefits or are below a certain income threshold can have the fees waived in full or in part. From 2025, working parents will be able to deduct 80 percent of daycare fees from their taxes, up to a maximum of 4,800 euros per child per year.

City emphasizes social responsibility

Head of Social Affairs Dieter Rosner emphasizes: "In recent years, the municipal budget has made it possible to make the daycare fees in the municipal facilities extremely affordable. In the current budget situation, we can no longer afford this subsidization, which is also unfair to parents who have their children looked after by independent providers. We know that an increase in fees is always a burden. At the same time, we must ensure the high quality of our daycare centers in the long term. That is why we are making the adjustments in a socially responsible way and supporting families on low incomes."
