Climate Alliance: High Participation Highlights Its Importance

Stand: 26.10.2026

The growing participation shows that climate protection and economic sustainability are being considered together. The Climate Alliance provides a framework for this, where knowledge can be shared, solutions discussed, and concrete steps toward a climate-neutral Erlangen can be initiated.

A few days ago, more than 30 companies and organizations gathered at City Hall for the 7th networking meeting of the Erlangen Climate Alliance to discuss risks, innovative technologies, and concrete measures for greater climate protection. The high level of interest underscores the importance that climate protection holds for Erlangen’s business community. This remains true even in light of current challenges such as the economic recession, armed conflicts, and high prices for fossil fuels.

In addition to Mayor Jörg Volleth, Deputy Mayor Eva Linhart and Sabine Bock, the city’s environmental and climate protection officer, also attended the meeting. In his opening remarks, the mayor emphasized the important role and responsibility of the business community on the path to climate neutrality.

In her presentation titled “When Weather Becomes a Profit-and-Loss Factor,” Environmental Affairs Officer Bock highlighted the economic consequences of rising temperatures. Against the backdrop of last summer’s heat waves and record-breaking temperatures, she demonstrated how climate change is affecting businesses. In addition to damage to infrastructure and consequences for agriculture, operational processes are also coming under increasing pressure. When temperatures rise above 30 degrees, employee productivity can decline, while at the same time energy demand—and thus energy costs—increase. This creates a double burden for companies. The central message of the presentation was therefore: “Climate risk is becoming a financial risk.” In conclusion, Bock offered guidance on how companies can address climate risks early on, strengthen their resilience, and prepare for the consequences of climate change.

Practical Examples Illustrate Concrete Solutions

Three additional keynote presentations illustrated how climate protection measures can be implemented in practice. The topics ranged

  • from the world’s first CO₂-neutral building demolition at the Siemens Technology Campus on Frauenauracher Straße to
  • possible models for “energy sharing” in Erlangen to
  • the first commissioning of a sustainable stationary sodium-ion storage system in Germany at the municipal department for urban green spaces, waste management, and street cleaning.

The “best practice” examples presented generated a great deal of interest. They highlighted various technical and organizational approaches and provided participants with ideas for their own climate protection measures.

Two additional presentations rounded out the program: They provided information on the current status of photovoltaic expansion in Erlangen as well as on the climate performance indicators of the partners in the Erlangen Climate Alliance. These indicators make progress in corporate climate protection transparent through concrete data and create a basis for evaluating one’s own development.

The 7th network meeting thus once again underscored the importance of exchange between business, academia, and city administration. The growing participation shows that climate protection and economic sustainability are being considered together. The Climate Alliance provides a framework for this, where knowledge can be shared, solutions discussed, and concrete steps toward a climate-neutral Erlangen can be initiated.
