There is a wide range of cultural and educational offerings: courses, workshops, lectures, concerts, readings, exhibitions, rehearsals, and programs for families, children, teens, and adults.

Institutions such as the municipal singing and music school, the youth art school, the children’s cultural office, the culture/health/nutrition programs of vhs Erlangen, the German-French Institute, and the German-French daycare center are all based there.

Many rooms are versatile: They are suitable for courses and workshops, rehearsals, presentations, conferences, club or committee meetings, and hybrid events. The kubic was created through the comprehensive renovation and expansion of the former Frankenhof Youth Center. Step by step, the historic, protected building complex was transformed into a modern cultural and educational campus. The planning aimed to

• visibly preserve the historic character of the Frankenhof and
• at the same time bringing it up to today’s standards in terms of construction and technology.

What was done?

• The existing buildings were extensively renovated
• Along Südliche Stadtmauerstraße, the buildings were raised by one story and new sections were added
• A new event hall was built in the inner courtyard and on the site of the former indoor swimming pool
• A new building housing a daycare center and other facilities was constructed on the eastern portion of the property
• Access points, elevators, and pathways were improved.

As a result, the campus is well-connected and as accessible as possible.

The renovation was one of Erlangen’s largest urban renewal projects. It has been carried out in several construction phases since 2017. User groups and the neighborhood were involved throughout the construction period.

The kubic was officially inaugurated on February 28, 2026, with a ceremony and a “housewarming party.” Numerous guests from the local community, the cultural sector, the education sector, and the political sphere celebrated the opening of the extensively renovated and expanded building that formerly housed the Frankenhof Leisure Center. Already in the afternoon, many visitors took the opportunity to take guided tours and get a glimpse of the new facilities—including the cooking workshop, the jewelry studio, and various group rooms.

The ceremony was accompanied by a varied cultural program. Participants included ensembles from the singing and music school, as well as contributions from the German-French Institute, the adult education center, the youth art school, and Lebenshilfe Erlangen, which provided insights into their work at kubic through musical performances and video presentations.

A Place for Participation and Social Interaction

In his commemorative speech, Mayor Florian Janik emphasized the importance of the new building for the city’s community: “Our goal was to create a space that is open to everyone. The kubic is a place of accessibility, inclusion, and participation. Here, people can come together, experience culture and education, and actively help shape the space.”

Anke Steinert-Neuwirth, Commissioner for Culture and Education, also highlighted the building’s special role: “Today, this place once again fully embodies its original vision: openness, social interaction, and cultural diversity. Even when it was first built, this building made a statement—and it continues to do so today.”

With kubic, the city of Erlangen is building on the long tradition of the Frankenhof. The historic, protected building underwent extensive renovation and expansion between 2018 and 2026. The goal was to create an open, accessible, and versatile space for all generations.
