Art Commission
Stand: 25.08.2025
The Erlangen Art Commission is an advisory body. It is made up of experts and knowledgeable citizens. The art commission advises on the topics of art in buildings and art in public spaces under municipal responsibility and recommends implementation options to the city council. Decisions are made by the city council.
The Art Commission's recommendations are therefore fundamentally concerned with municipal building projects in the city of Erlangen and the display of art in public spaces. The composition of the Art Commission is decided every three years by the City Council of Erlangen. The City of Erlangen's approach to art in architecture and art in public spaces is generally competition-based. Members of the art commission are part of the competition juries.
Quoted from the preamble to the rules of procedure of the Erlangen Art Commission:
"The installation of works of art in public spaces brings about an examination of current issues in society and positions in art. In this sense, the urban space of Erlangen is to be enhanced and accentuated ... The public space bears witness to the self-image of a city and its citizens ... Art in the public space aims to promote the cultural attractiveness of the location in social, aesthetic and tourist terms ...
The City of Erlangen's aim and building culture aspiration is to facilitate high-quality and innovative art in public building projects. Art in architecture not only serves to create added cultural value in the city, but is also a form of support for artists and culture. Art in architecture ... always presupposes an artistic and substantive examination of the building, its function and the urban environment. Individual artists can be specifically commissioned to implement art on buildings in municipal construction projects, but a broader spectrum is achieved by organizing open or invited art competitions. In principle, all forms of contemporary art can be installed in public spaces.
The art commission should also submit proposals for art in public spaces independently of specific planning projects."
