Erlangen Art Museum
Stand: 13.01.2026
On display is a collection of regional art from Franconia and the Upper Palatinate.
The Kunstmuseum Erlangen, which is now run by the city, is based on the commitment of the Förderverein Kunstmuseum, which was founded in 1989 by citizens of Erlangen. Its aim was to build up a collection of regional art from Franconia and the Upper Palatinate. The resulting extensive collection is regularly presented in exhibitions.
At the beginning, the association did not have its own exhibition space. It therefore organized exhibitions in the City Museum and in the New Gallery of the Kunstverein. In 1998, Bernd Nürmberger, the first chairman of the association at the time, acquired the Loewenich Palace. It initially served as a temporary exhibition venue. In 2001, the decision was made to make the palace the permanent home of an art museum. Manfred Hopfengärtner, then site manager of Siemens AG Erlangen, was an important supporter during this phase.
The modern extension doubled the museum's exhibition space to 300m². The association was renamed Kunstmuseum Erlangen e.V. and ran the art museum on a voluntary basis until 2016 with the help of sponsors and municipal grants.
