Excerpts from the FAU’s Master Plan for the South Campus

• Implementation of the State Cabinet Decision on the Further Development and Consolidation of the Faculty of Engineering at the South Campus (2017 / 2018)
  
  
• Joint Statement by the Free State of Bavaria, the City of Erlangen, Siemens, and FAU dated September 13, 2018
  
  
• Determination, analysis, and verification of the future space requirements of the FAU Faculty of Engineering

Key elements of the master plan were presented in thematic plans, excerpts of which are published here. The most important guidelines of the master plan are:

• A cohesive, unified campus is to be created
  
  
• A green boulevard as a connecting element: attractive, interconnected open spaces and plazas offering a high quality of stay, reserved for pedestrians and cyclists
  
  
• New buildings should face the green boulevard and the access roads
  
  
• Integration of the Siemens Campus site into the design and structure of the FAU university campus
  
  
• Placement of so-called “landmarks” to improve orientation and enhance the site’s public image
  
  
• Uses and building volumes compatible with the urban environment; integration with the surrounding area, e.g., opening the campus to the neighboring residential population
  
  
• Largely car-free campus: Concentration of motorized traffic on major roads and of parking spaces in parking garages on the outskirts of the campus
  
  
• Central location of high-traffic facilities (e.g., lecture halls) that is easily accessible by all modes of transportation
  
  
• Placement of facilities with high technical requirements and heavy-duty traffic in the outlying areas
  
  
• Conservative and sustainable use of land
  
  
• Integration of climate protection and climate adaptation measures into the ongoing implementation

The City of Erlangen, represented by the Department of Planning and Construction / Office of Urban Planning and Mobility, was involved in the development of the master plan.
The master plan is a fundamental urban development concept of the Free State of Bavaria for the FAU development. As a form of other urban planning, it serves as the basis for necessary land-use planning (land-use plan amendments and zoning plans) by the City of Erlangen.
As part of such subsequent planning processes, further intensive coordination will take place between the relevant departments of the Free State of Bavaria, FAU, and the City of Erlangen. The public, organizations representing public interests, and other authorities will also have the opportunity to receive information and express their views.
