Nature conservation; bat consultant
Stand: 21.11.2024
Bats are strictly protected in Germany and their killing is prohibited. All bat species are also under national and international protection.
Cities also bear a great responsibility for the protection and preservation of their roosts. In the past, the animals have adapted to the habitats provided by buildings and green spaces in cities and found new retreats. Nevertheless, bats are primarily threatened by habitat loss. This occurs, for example, when niches in houses are sealed, attics are insulated or old trees are felled.
The city of Erlangen has a volunteer bat consultant who has been committed to bat conservation for years and has successfully completed a two-stage training course at the Bavarian Academy for Nature Conservation and Landscape Management (ANL) to become a certified bat consultant.
The tasks of these consultants include
- Inspecting caves, cellars, churches and similar in the case of reported renovation projects and informing the lower nature conservation authority and the coordination office for bat protection about bat occupancy
- Advising affected parties on new reports of bat occurrences
- Recording dead finds, caring for bat foundlings or arranging expert caretakers
