New A73 underpass for fast cycle traffic
Stand: 07.10.2024
On September 26, 2024, the city council had to make a fundamental decision on the further planning for the undercrossing of the A73 freeway at the level of the large parking lot, the future Regnitzstadt.
Two variants were put to the vote, which can be realized in the course of the construction of the Stadt-Umland-Bahn (StUB):
- a solution with a two-sided footpath and cycle path and
- the smaller and significantly cheaper option with a one-sided footpath and cycle path.
What exactly is at stake
The Zweckverband Stadt-Umland-Bahn (StUB), which is planning the route and the underpass structure, needs the decision at this point in time. Reason To coordinate further preliminary planning with the federal government's Autobahn GmbH and to draw up a corresponding planning agreement as soon as possible. This new underpass to be built is to become the property of and be maintained by Autobahn GmbH des Bundes after completion.
In future, the underpass under the freeway will play a central role in connecting the inner city and the Regnitzstadt to the Wiesengrund and the western districts as well as in the city's cycle path network. Cycle traffic will be routed without crossings on an important and extensive main axis.
Current technical data for the structure
The underpass will have a width of approx. 16.10 meters. The streetcar tracks with a width of 8.10 meters and a clearance height of 4.50 meters are located in the northern section of the underpass. Shared use of the tracks for bus services and emergency vehicles from the police, fire department and rescue services has been taken into account. The areas for cycling and pedestrian traffic are to be located to the south of the StUB route. These include the high-speed cycle link and a footpath with a combined width of 7.50 meters and a clearance height of 4.00 meters.
An initial estimate puts the costs for the city at between 6.5 and 7.5 million euros for the additional cycle and pedestrian undercrossing.
