The City of Erlangen Welcomes New Young Professionals

On August 31, the new trainees in administrative, industrial-technical, and business roles were welcomed first. On September 1, the new trainees in the education sector followed.

A total of 31 new recruits—19 women and 12 men—began their apprenticeships or dual study programs on September 1 in administrative, industrial-technical, and business-related fields with the City of Erlangen. The spectrum ranges from administrative service and training to become administrative clerks, through commercial and technical professions, to dual degree programs in the fields of administrative information technology, civil engineering, and social administration and social security.

“With our young professionals, we are gaining people who will actively help shape the future of our city administration. We want to offer them a high-quality education, give them responsibility early on, and retain them for the City of Erlangen in the long term,” says Thomas Ternes, Director of Legal Affairs and Human Resources.

On September 1, 18 future educators—16 women and two men—were welcomed at a special kickoff event. Eight of them are completing the practice-integrated training program (PiA), seven are doing their vocational internship, and two are pursuing child care training with an increased practical component (KiPrax). Another trainee is completing the Introductory Year in Social Pedagogy (SEJ). On October 1, three more women will begin their SEJ. The trainees will be assigned to the city’s daycare centers as well as its play and learning rooms.

The professional backgrounds of these emerging educators are diverse: While some began their careers in the field of education immediately after graduating from high school, others already have completed vocational training, a college degree, or have professional experience.

“Our new young professionals in the field of education come from diverse professional backgrounds. They are all united by the goal of guiding, supporting, and nurturing children and families in Erlangen. In doing so, they are taking on a responsibility for the future of our city,” says Third Mayor Christian Lehrmann.

Under the guiding principle “Actively shaping the future TOGETHER,” the City of Erlangen is committed to providing qualified and needs-based training. The goal is to foster the professional and personal development of these new recruits and, in the long term, to retain them in roles with the City of Erlangen.
