Poetry and world affairs: 44th Erlangen Poets' Festival
Stand: 23.08.2024
Every year on the last weekend in August, Erlangen celebrates the start of the German Autumn Book Festival with the Poet*innenfest.
From August 29 to September 1, there will be around 80 individual events focusing on current literature. Over 90 writers, literary critics and publishers will present their new publications in readings and discussions. This year, the reading afternoons in the palace gardens will once again take center stage.
To kick things off, Bayerischer Rundfunk will present the Bayern 2 Night of Poetry in the Markgrafentheater on Thursday, August 29 at 8:00 pm. Nora Bossong, Aris Fioretos, Valerie Fritsch and Jo Lendle, among others, will read from their new publications during the reading afternoons in the Schlossgarten. The evening author portraits, in which life and work are presented in readings and discussions, are dedicated to Katja Lange-Müller (August 30), Jenny Erpenbeck (August 31) and, on the occasion of his 80th birthday, Fitzgerald Kusz (September 1).
The talks and discussions will focus on the US election and the state elections on September 1, the Middle East conflict and our culture of debate. The current panel deals with the topic of freedom, the Sunday matinee with diplomacy. The willingness to engage in dialogue and debate with other opinions is the common thread running through the Poet*innenfest program. Literary translators will present their current projects at the 20th Erlangen Translators' Workshop at the E-Werk cultural center. There will also be exhibitions and literary film screenings. For children and families, there will be readings, the traditional reading meadow and the printing workshop in the castle garden.
The detailed program is available at advance booking offices, bookshops and the Erlangen City Library. Most events are free of charge. Tickets for the events requiring admission are available at the usual advance booking offices and online.
