Seed library - a colorful vision of a diverse future
Stand: 15.04.2025
The Erlangen City Library and the intercultural community garden "UnserGarten Bruck" have jointly laid the foundation stone for the Erlangen Seed Library.
Seeds can now be borrowed from both the gardening department and the book bus of the city library, as well as from the community garden of the Kulturpunkt Bruck district center. Only seed-resistant vegetable varieties and a selection of flower and herb seeds are available. The seed library concept originally comes from the USA and was introduced there with the aim of preserving endangered crops and promoting biodiversity. The preservation of seeds is intended to counteract the spread of genetically modified plants and promote biodiversity.
In preparation, seeds were diligently collected in the Bruck community garden and seed collection was intensified there. As the seed library is still in its infancy and a large variety is to be created, the people of Erlangen are very welcome to help build up the library. Amateur gardeners can collect seeds and bring them to the community garden or the city library. Seeds are only taken from seed-resistant varieties. The dried seeds should be packed separately by variety in paper bags and labeled with names. The community garden is happy to provide advice on taking seeds and is available to answer any further questions.
And this is how it works:
- Drop by, take the seeds,
- sow, nurture, care,
- obtain seeds yourself
- and bring a small amount back to the lending station at the end of the gardening season!
