City council sets course for southern city district

Stand: 11.08.2025

With the decision to draw up development plan no. 440, the city council has taken an important step towards the development of a new, urban district.

Over the next few years, a lively, mixed-use quarter is to be created on around 16.5 hectares in the south of the Siemens Campus, with

  • around 2,000 apartments
  • complementary commercial uses and social
  • social infrastructure.

From research site to urban quarter

Entwurf Siemens Campus. The future Stadtquartier Süd (photo: Siemens AG) is being built on parts of the former Siemens research site between Günther-Scharowsky-Straße, Schuckertstraße and Henri-Dunant-Straße. The aim is to transform the largely unused area into a green, climate-friendly and socially diverse district.

The plans include

  • various forms of housing - including for older people
  • a hotel
  • a medical center
  • a boarding house and
  • space for a day care center,
  • a district center and
  • local amenities.

Competition as the basis for planning

The basis for the future urban development is the winning design from a competition organized by Siemens AG in close cooperation with the city of Erlangen. The design by LAUX Architekten GmbH (Munich) together with Terra.Nova Landschaftsarchitektur focuses on

  • a climate and socially responsible structure
  • strong greening and
  • a good connection to existing paths and the adjacent Siemens Campus.

Starting signal for the development plan procedure

The formal development plan procedure will now begin with the decision to draw up the development plan. At the same time, the land use plan with integrated landscape plan will be amended. The area previously designated as commercial is to be shown as mixed building land in future. This will create the legal basis for implementing the competition concept under planning law.

Participation and timetable

The next step is the early involvement of the public and public agencies. After evaluating the feedback, the draft development plan will be further elaborated. Construction of the quarter is expected to be possible from 2027. The first apartments could be occupied from 2029.
