Heavy rainfall map: citizens called upon to participate
Stand: 17.03.2026
Heavy rainfall events are on the increase - and with them the risks for people, the environment and infrastructure. In order to better assess these dangers and develop suitable protective measures, a heavy rain hazard map is currently being drawn up for the entire city area.
The heavy rainfall map shows where surface runoff, flooding from bodies of water or flooding from the sewer system can occur during heavy rainfall.
Help needed
The help of citizens and businesses is also needed. Anyone who has already experienced heavy rain or flooding can report their experiences via the so-called heavy rain detector at www.starkregenmelder.de and, if necessary, submit damage images. Information on the location, time and type of flooding is required. A similar form is available for download at the bottom of the page. It is also available as a printout at the town hall. The information from the public helps to refine the risk map and better identify particularly affected areas.

Recognizing risks
The heavy rain hazard map is intended to help identify risks at an early stage and develop suitable protective measures. The aim is to
- keep potential damage to a minimum
- to increase the safety of citizens and
- to strengthen municipal risk management.
At the same time, the map serves as a basis for planning decisions - for example in the areas of construction, environment and disaster control. It is also to be integrated into existing plans such as land use or development plans.
Flash flood risk management is being implemented with funding from the Free State of Bavaria. With the help of computer simulations
- different heavy rainfall scenarios are analyzed
- areas particularly affected are identified and
- suitable protective measures are developed.
The city of Erlangen is being supported in this by SPEKTER, a consultancy specializing in heavy rain. Once the heavy rain hazard map has been completed (expected by the end of 2027), it will be presented to the public.
An analogous form is available for download as a PDF at the bottom of the page.
This can be printed out and filled in by hand and then handed in at the Office for Environmental Protection and Energy Issues at Schuhstraße 40 - 4th floor.
Printouts of the form are also available at the Citizens' Information Office on the first floor of the Town Hall (Rathauspl. 1).
As the PDF is currently not barrier-free, the responsible clerk from the Office for Environmental Protection and Energy Issues will be happy to provide assistance (Tel.: 09131/86-1864, Schuhstraße 40 / Room 411).
The information from the public will help to further refine the risk map and better identify particularly affected areas.
