StUB: "Huge opportunity for future viability"
Stand: 28.05.2024
Mayor Florian Janik provides information in a video. Siemens, Friedrich-Alexander University and the University Hospital are investing billions in Erlangen over the coming years. The city's infrastructure must keep pace with this development. An important building block for efficient local public transport is the Stadt-Umland-Bahn (StUB).
At the end of November, the StUB special-purpose association presented an updated cost calculation and its reviews of the planning options examined via the Regnitzgrund. The good news: the cost share for the cities in the project is lower than it was at the start of planning. And despite price increases, the StUB has a high cost-benefit factor.
A worthwhile investment
The costs for the overall project were re-estimated on the basis of the current planning status at the 2022 price level. Accordingly, the investment costs amount to around 635 million euros (previously 372 million euros), while the planning costs are around 95 million euros (previously 56 million euros). It should be noted here that a large part of the cost increase is due to inflationary effects. In addition, the risk buffer was increased from 10% to 20% in order to further reduce the cost risk for the future. Around 35 million euros are attributable to the further optimized planning. Among other things, the StUB will now run in Büchenbach
Büchenbach on the Adenauerring to save space.
Over 500 million euros in funding
The benefit-cost indicator of the StUB, which is decisive for the funding of the project by the federal and state governments, is 2.0, confirming the preliminary result of the test calculations presented in the spring. The benefits of the StUB therefore far exceed the costs
costs by far - despite price increases. The city's goal of obtaining more funding for the project has also been achieved despite the price increases.
despite the price increases. Erlangen no longer bears 23 percent of the total project costs, but eleven percent. "Erlangen's share of the project has fallen from 100,000,000 to 82,000,000 euros with today's prices. This is a large investment, but it can be easily financed, especially spread over several years," says Lord Mayor Florian Janik. "The federal and state governments are prepared to invest more than 500,000,000 euros in our region - for the construction of the StUB. This is a huge opportunity, and we cannot afford to miss out on these funds in view of the future viability of our business and science location. Because: For the many people
who study or work here, we have to provide an efficient transport infrastructure," Janik continued.
Wöhrmühl Bridge has a clear advantage
For the Regnitz Valley crossing, the special-purpose association is in favor of the new Wöhrmühl Bridge after thorough examination. The re-examined route via the Büchenbacher Damm has numerous disadvantages. For example, four junctions around the Erlangen-Bruck highway junction would have to be completely rebuilt in order to be able to handle car traffic and the StUB together. Whether this is even possible remains to be seen. Due to the high cost of this measure alone, the Zweckverband expects a planning delay of at least five years. Overall, the additional costs of routing the StUB over the Büchenbacher Damm compared to the Wöhrmühlbrücke would amount to at least 80 million euros - with significantly worse benefits. This is because the Wöhrmühl Bridge would also enable significant improvements for the bus system throughout the city. The city center could be relieved of bus traffic, and for practically the entire west of the city, the journey time to the city center by public transport would be reduced to a few minutes.
would be reduced to just a few minutes by public transport, encouraging significantly more passengers to switch to buses and streetcars.
and trams. The longer route in particular would also significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the Büchenbacher Dam.
