Dead fish are invasive species

Stand: 21.05.2026

For several days now, there has been an increase in dead dwarf catfish at the Dechsendorf pond. This is a disease in the fish species. There is no danger to humans or other animals as the fungus only affects dwarf catfish.

This species is problematic in many European waters as it is not native and reproduces particularly prolifically. The dwarf catfish competes with native fish species. It displaces young fish and adversely affects the populations of other species. In addition, dwarf catfish feed predatorily on spawn, insect larvae and small fish.

Due to their high adaptability, they survive even under unfavorable conditions such as a lack of oxygen or turbid water and therefore spread quickly. As they often lack natural enemies in the water, their populations can grow rapidly. Overall, dwarf catfish therefore contribute to disturbing the ecological balance of water bodies. The Dechsendorf pond is also struggling with this species. Due to the high population density, the animal health service diagnosed a disease (fungus) in dead dwarf catfish in 2024, which leads to the death of the infected fish.

Employees are regularly on site and also remove dead fish.
