Diversity of India in Erlangen

In recent years, Erlangen has seen an increased influx of skilled workers and students from India, making it the largest group of immigrants with over 4,000 people.

For this reason, the city council commissioned the Office for Equal Opportunities and Diversity to work together with the various groups of the Indian community in Erlangen and municipal institutions to develop a year-round series of events for 2024.

The aim of the "Diversity of India" program was to make the diversity of India as a country of origin, its history and society as well as the different aspects of its culture and religions visible and more accessible and to promote encounters and exchange. The community is as diverse as the Indian subcontinent: the immigrants come from different states, belong to different religions and speak different languages, most of them choose English as their language of communication. It is therefore not surprising that a diverse, colorful and extensive program was put together in the workshops, which is mainly due to the great civic commitment of the Indian community.

At 89 events in 2024, all interested Erlangen residents were able to learn new things about India, celebrate festivals together with the Indian community and exchange ideas about the country and its people.

The series of events promoted encounters and solidarity in Erlangen and strengthened cooperation between the various Indian groups and associations and the different municipal departments. This contribution to successful, sustainable integration will be continued in the future.
