At the conference of the European twin cities of San Carlos in October 2005, the topic of health was declared a central aspect of future development cooperation between Erlangen and San Carlos. As a result, Erlangen was able to provide US$ 15,000 the following year for this new facility, which primarily accommodates recently operated orthopaedic patients who had previously been in general rooms where they were exposed to an increased risk of infection. At the time, the "Sala Erlangen" was the only hospital ward of its kind in the entire province of Río San Juan. The costs for the room with its eight beds and one treatment room amounted to a total of US$ 36,000. Erlangen contributed US$ 15,000 to this sum, most of which came from donations from the people of Erlangen and the city council. The "One World" working group of the Erlangen Agenda21 advisory board was particularly active. Alongside Erlangen, Taiwan supported the construction and furnishing of the "Sala Erlangen".
