Part 3: Improving infrastructure in three schools in the rural part of San Carlos (2023-2024)
The majority of the inhabitants of San Carlos do not live in the actual city center, but in numerous small settlements in the surrounding area, which can often only be reached by arduous land or water routes, some of which take several hours. The remote location of many of these sub-communities naturally has major consequences for the people there, e.g. when it comes to water supply or access to medical care. There are also differences in everyday school life. Some schools are only built in a makeshift manner, their location is unsuitable or there is a lack of funds to repair necessary damage caused by storms and weather. Against this backdrop, the San Carlos-based NGO ASODELCO proposed a joint partnership project to improve the school infrastructure in three rural sub-communities of San Carlos. The city of Erlangen supported this project together with the German embassy in Managua and the city of Nuremberg, and from 2023-2024, construction work was carried out in the three sub-communities of La Palmera, La Cusuca 2 and San Augustin to create new classrooms and improve the school facilities.
Environmental education was a further concern of the project and so school gardens were created, workshops were held and 350 trees/forest plants that are native to the area were planted. Information events on hygiene and nutrition as well as the purchase of water filters for all three schools rounded off the project.
In all three sub-communities, the implementation of the project was supported by the parents of the schoolchildren, particularly in the form of manpower (e.g. for transporting materials and cleaning).
