When the forest burns

Stand: 04.07.2025

Forest fire risk increases with climate change - Erlangen has also been preparing for years. A portrait of the Office for Fire and Disaster Protection.

As a result of climate change, experts have observed increasingly dry summers in recent years - the lack of
precipitation over several weeks or months has also occurred in Germany in recent years. Against this backdrop, the risk of forest fires is also increasing. In some cases, this poses new challenges for fire departments across the country. The city's fire and disaster control department started to set the right course ten years ago. "Fighting vegetation fires has become less important over the decades, as there were rarely fires in the forest - the main focus for the fire departments was on road accidents or building fires," explains office manager Friedhelm Weidinger.
