ESD Future Workshop—Schools in Urban and Rural Areas of Erlangen Take Action

Every year in early summer, the ESD Action Day “Erlangen Schools in the City and Countryside Set Out on Their Journey” takes place at Hugenottenplatz from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participating in the sustainability fair are elementary and middle schools from the city and county, as well as the Erlangen ESD network “Education for the Environment and Sustainability.” The event is accompanied by music from the big band of the Ernst-Penzoldt Middle School in Spardorf. Organizers from the Losch School and the Environmental Office/ESD Unit, along with representatives from the State School Authority, welcome the guests.

At the booths, a variety of topics related to sustainability will be explored and presented. Extracurricular organizations will showcase ESD materials for visitors to try out and borrow, provide information on educational programs and learning site profiles, and collect ideas for sustainable education in the future in a “wish globe” sculpture.

The Future Workshop is aimed at families and passersby, other schools, and anyone interested in education and sustainability. The students serve as points of contact for their sustainable school projects, sell handmade items from the school garden or other workshops, and offer hands-on activities. They are the main protagonists who want to show the urban community that—and how—young people contribute to a sustainable future and take responsibility for tomorrow through their own ideas, projects, and work on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through their commitment, they inspire reflection and action—so that everyone can live together in a way that conserves resources and treats one another fairly. Through their public appearances, the students engage in dialogue with the local community, advocate for their positions, experience a sense of self-efficacy, and thereby develop a stronger sense of self through positive experiences—because that is what ESD is all about. Through the ESD Action Day, the topic finds a place at the heart of the city, thereby bringing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to the forefront of society.
