Permit Process for the Extraction of GW SF 15 and SF 16

Stand: 30.10.2026

Notice Enforcement of the Water Resources Act (WHG) and the Bavarian Water Act (BayWG); Permit procedure for the extraction of groundwater by Erlanger Stadtwerke AG, Äußere Brucker Straße 33, 91052 Erlangen, from the new wells SF 15 and SF 16 (parcel no. 2977/0, Erlangen cadastral district) in the southern section of the West Water Protection Area for the public water supply of the city of Erlangen

Erlanger Stadtwerke AG has applied for a permit (Sections 8(1) and 10(1) of the Water Resources Act (WHG)) to extract groundwater from the new wells SF 15 and SF 16 (Parcel No. 2977/0, Erlangen cadastral district).

An increase in the volume approved by the City of Erlangen in its decision dated October 14, 1999, Ref. No.: I/R/314/Ros. (with an amendment notice dated March 22, 2018, Ref. No.: I/31/BB008, and an amendment notice dated June 19, 2020, Ref. No.: VII/31/KK021) was not requested.

To date, wells SF 02/04/06/07/08/09/10/11/12/13/14 have been operated there to extract the approved withdrawal volumes. Wells SF 04 and SF 05 were decommissioned in 2026 and replaced by wells SF 15 and SF 16, which are now to be put into operation to ensure consistent drinking water quality.

The pumping capacity approved on October 14, 1999, is to be distributed among all remaining wells, including wells SF 15 and SF 16. The following maximum groundwater volumes are to be extracted from well SF 15:

  • 16.3 liters per second (12.2 liters per second during continuous operation)
  • 1,408 m³ per day
  • 385,000 m³ per year.

The following groundwater volumes are planned for well SF 16:

  • 12.6 liters per second (9.5 liters per second during continuous operation)
  • 1,089 m³ per day
  • 300,000 m³ per year.

The extraction of groundwater constitutes a use of water resources within the meaning of
Section 9(1)(5) of the Water Resources Act (WHG) and therefore requires a permit or authorization
(§ 8 WHG).

The project is being announced in accordance with Art. 69(2), sentences 1 through 3, of the Bavarian Water Act (BayWG) in conjunction with Art. 73(5) of the Bavarian Administrative Procedure Act (BayVwVfG).

The application documents will be available from Monday, November 9, 2026, through Tuesday, December 8, 2026, on the City of Erlangen’s website at the following link
