Erlangen wastewater treatment plant - expansion concept 2030: elimination of trace substances
Stand: 08.04.2024
The existing wastewater treatment process leaves trace substances from pharmaceuticals and personal care products as well as certain industrial and household chemicals almost completely in the treated wastewater.
A 4th purification stage is necessary to treat the wastewater accordingly before it flows back into the Regnitz.
Informationen
A new sewage sludge treatment plant with integrated phosphorus recovery has been in operation since April 26, 2023.
- The volume of sewage sludge to be recycled is reduced by drying, thereby reducing costs and CO2 emissions
- It is now possible to recover the phosphorus contained in the sewage sludge for reuse, for example as fertilizer in agriculture. However, further adjustments to the purification process, which are already underway, are necessary to fully exploit the potential of the plant.
The run-in phase has largely been completed.
The trace substances still detectable after wastewater treatment are harmful to the environment and aquatic ecology despite their small quantity, and the 4th treatment stage is intended to eliminate these from the wastewater as far as possible before it flows out of the treatment plant back into the Regnitz.
In the next step, the relevant plans will be submitted to the construction and works committee for approval.
The entire expansion concept has been underway since 2020 and the 4th purification stage should also be completed by the end of 2026.
estimated at around 31.3 million euros
