ADFC bicycle climate test: Erlangen in 1st place

Stand: 07.07.2025

Erlangen was once again awarded first place (overall score of 3.1) in the "top performer" category in the 100,000 to 200,000 population size class in the cycling climate test conducted by the German Cyclists' Federation (ADFC).

From September to November 2024, cyclists in Germany were able to use a questionnaire to assess how bicycle-friendly their cities and municipalities are. Participants rated the winter service on cycle paths, the fact that cycling is promoted in many places and that the bicycle is a means of transport for all generations as strengths. On the other hand, the number of bicycle thefts, the possibility of taking bicycles on public transport and the signposting for bicycles were rated critically. While the average scores in towns and cities with a population of 100,000 to 200,000 have deteriorated slightly in recent years, Erlangen has scored better in each of the last three surveys.

Numerous improvements

Die Universitätsstraße als Fahrradstraße mit Radfahrenden und Fußgänger."A climate-friendly transport transition cannot succeed without the bicycle. We have long recognized this in Erlangen and have continuously worked on expanding and improving our cycling infrastructure in recent years," said Lord Mayor Florian Janik. For example, numerous secure parking facilities have been created throughout the city as part of the 1,000 bike racks program. The cycle path network has been closed at important points and pioneering projects such as the environmental lanes on the Europakanal as part of the future Bamberg-Nuremberg metropolitan cycle path have been implemented.

"Unfortunately, the necessary budget consolidation will slow us down somewhat over the next few years," said planning and construction officer Harald Lang. An improved signage concept is already available, but the signs could not yet be installed throughout the city due to budget cuts. "However, the goal of making cycling in Erlangen even more attractive remains clear," continued Lang. With the further developed Bicycle City of the Future plan, the focus is on improving the main cycle routes and connecting the central districts, residential and working areas as well as educational institutions and neighboring municipalities.
