The city archive is responsible for the administrative records of the entire city. In addition, we acquire and manage the archives of Erlangen associations and companies, family estates and all kinds of Erlangensia through purchases and donations. We have a diverse collection of books, newspapers, coins, medals, postcards, photographs and much more.

Inventory overview

Due to the town fire in 1706, the preservation of the older holdings has been impaired.

  • Documents: more than 15,100 (the oldest original document from 1389)
  • Official records: including Urbare (from 1530); council minutes
  • Municipal administration files (from around 1650)
    • Collection 1: Old Town Erlangen (until 1818)
    • Fonds 2: Erlangen-Neustadt, Christian-Erlangen (1686-1812)
    • Inventory 3: United City (1744-1756)
    • Fonds 4: Police magistrate and city council (1798-1815)
    • Fonds 5: Erlangen Police Commissariat (1812-1818)
    • Fonds 6: City Magistrate Erlangen (1818-1918)
    • Fonds 7: Archive of the College of Municipal Plenipotentiaries (1818-1919)
    • Fonds 8: Files of the administration of the private Altstädter Gemeindevermögen (Altstädter Kommune) (1823-1928)
    • Fonds 9: Files of the main registry (specialist numbers of the city of Erlangen) (1919-ca.1965/66)

The holdings since the mid-1960s are made up of the individual submissions of the municipal offices.

  • Archives of the incorporated towns: Alterlangen, Bruck, Büchenbach with Neumühle, Eltersdorf, Frauenaurach, Dechsendorf, Hüttendorf, Häusling, Kosbach, Kriegenbrunn, Siglitzhof, Steudach, Tennenlohe
  • Archive of the Atzelsberg manor (1705-1960)
  • Platen archive: literature about and by August Graf von Platen (1796-1835) and archive of the former Platen Society Erlangen (1925-1945)
  • Specialist literature: reference library with approx. 40,000 volumes
  • Collections: including maps and plans; coins and medals; autographs; architectural and architectural drawings; special collections on people, professions, streets and houses; genealogy; photos, negatives, slides (over 1 million), posters, films; printing blocks; approx. 4,200 postcards and picture postcards with Erlangen motifs; flyers; playbills (18th century); contemporary history collections.); contemporary history collections (1914-1918, 1939-1943, from 1945); newspapers (e.g. Erlanger Realzeitung 1741-1829, Erlangischer Gelehrter Anzeiger 1743-1752, Erlanger Volksblatt 1924-1933, Erlanger Tagblatt and Nachrichten from 1828); collection of seal impressions and types; French notarial records (Caries, Meynier, Petit, late 17th cent, first half of 18th century); "Großner" collection on the postal history of Erlangen
