Current statistics 3/2026: Population forecast 2026 - 2041
Stand: 23.04.2026
Small-scale population forecast up to 2041
The Department of Statistics and Urban Research is publishing a current small-scale population forecast for the city of Erlangen in the "Statistik aktuell" series in issue 3/2026. Based on the population as at 31.12.2025, the population is projected up to 2041 on the basis of small-scale birth, death and migration rates. The planned new development areas play a key role in the forecast calculation.
For years, Erlangen has seen significant population growth due to a migration surplus, which was only slowed slightly in 2020 by the coronavirus pandemic. The main resident population is expected to increase from the current 121,650 to around 125,500 over the next ten years. This population growth is only possible thanks to ongoing construction activity: the largest increase in population is expected in the Forschungszentrum area as a result of the Siemens Stadtquartier Süd. Large population increases are also foreseeable in Stubenloh and Büchenbach West.
The age structure of the population will shift due to the gradual progression of baby boomers into retirement age by 2041: The 65 to 80-year-olds are expected to see the largest increase.
