Educational Programs
Stand: 17.06.2026
Through a variety of events and programs—for school groups, college students, and individuals—we offer anyone interested the opportunity to learn about the archive and its work and to delve into Erlangen’s city history through selected sources.
At the heart of our historical education work with children, young people, and adults is engagement with original sources. These sources are an indispensable foundation for actively and critically examining the past and historical narratives. Building on this, the function and role of archives in a democratic society also become clear.
You can find the latest events and programs for the general public under “News ” or “Events.”

Archive Tours
We regularly offer guided tours of the archive’s facilities as part of events such as Open Monument Day or the Long Night of Science. These tours explain the work of the archive and provide insights into Erlangen’s city history. Guided tours are also held regularly in cooperation with the Erlangen Adult Education Center; please check their program as well.
We are also happy to offer guided tours for your group upon request.

Archive tours with source research, e.g., for students
For students of history or cultural studies, we are happy to offer introductions to archival work and the use of archives, including independent source research depending on the topic of your seminar or course.
We’re also happy to support you with your projects beyond that! Feel free to reach out to us at: stadtarchiv@stadt.erlangen.de or by phone at 09131/86-2885.
Archival Education Programs for School Classes or Preschool Classes
Erlangen’s city history offers numerous points of connection to the curriculum of all types of schools. Sources from Erlangen can be used to bring not only local history but also German and world history to life. At the same time, a visit to the archive allows students to engage with original sources, inviting them to reflect on the transmission of historical events and the construction of historical narratives.
In consultation with the teacher, we will put together a program tailored to the specific age group, the group’s level of learning, and the time available at the archive. The program can focus on aspects of the city’s history, or it can center on the archive and its functions, or on historical sources in general.
Both project groups (e.g., W or P seminars, science weeks, etc.) and entire classes are welcome! All programs are free of charge.

Examples of topics for school classes:
e.g., for preschool classes (early awareness of time, the function of writing and documents: How do we know what happened in the past?) or 4th grade (learning area “Time and Change: The Past, Present, and Future of Our Community”)
but also for older students: How does historical research work? How are historical narratives formed? Why are primary sources so important?
e.g., in the 7th or 10th grade of a Realschule (curriculum topics: religious conflicts or migration) or the 11th grade of a Gymnasium
e.g., 8th or 9th grade at a Mittelschule, 9th grade at a Realschule, or 9th or 12th grade at a Gymnasium
