The historian Karl Hegel and his house in Erlangen
Stand: 29.05.2026
Lecture by Professor Dr. Helmut Neuhaus at the Erlangen City Archive on June 10, 2026
The historian Karl Hegel (1813-1901), son of the famous philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, who came from the University of Rostock as a full professor, was Professor of History at the University of Erlangen from 1856 until the end of his life and became the leading urban historian of his time, highly respected at home and abroad. Married to Susanna Maria von Tucher from Nuremberg, he built a house in Erlangen on the site of today's University Children's Hospital, which his large family was able to move into in the summer of 1861. He himself documented the construction work in a booklet entitled "Hausbau" (Building a House) with his personal notes on the work of the various trades and the costs.
The speaker, Professor Dr. Helmut Neuhaus, held the Chair of Modern History at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg from 1989 to 2009. His numerous publications include editions of "Karl Hegel's Memorial Book. Lebenschronik eines Gelehrten des 19. Jahrhunderts" (2013) and the "Brautbriefe Susanna Maria von Tuchers an Karl Hegel. From the family history of the Nuremberg patrician family Tucher von Simmelsdorf 1849/50" (2022).
