the companions. The educational mentoring program
Stand: 05.07.2024
Volunteer educational mentors support pupils from Erlangen. They support and accompany children and young people in school challenges and in their development.
What is diebegleiter?
In the "diebegleiter" program, volunteer adults take on a sponsorship role. The main aim is to promote equal opportunities in education and integration.
The educational mentors support pupils from Erlangen with school subjects and personal development. The focus of the sponsorship is discussed together and is based on the wishes and possibilities of the sponsored child and the educational sponsors.
The voluntary work and support remains flexible: when, how often and for how long you meet is determined by the sponsored child and the educational mentor. Whether school tutoring, career guidance or arriving in Erlangen. The sponsored child and the educational sponsor decide together. They spend an afternoon doing homework together, practicing for a job interview, playing soccer or visiting a museum. The sponsorship can take many different forms - just like the abilities and interests of you and your sponsored child.
During the sponsorship, the educational sponsors and sponsored children are supported by our team, who are always on hand to answer questions and help with challenges. We also offer training opportunities and exchange with other educational mentors in the form of mentor meetings, supervision and joint festivities.

FAQ - all important questions
In principle, there is no specific qualification that you must have. And of course you don't have to be able to do all the school subjects. If you are interested, simply contact us. In a non-binding introductory meeting, we will look together for possible skills that you can contribute to a sponsorship.
For example, an educational mentor may have good English skills and be able to pass these on to a young person. Or you may have the confidence to help with German homework or finding an internship. Together we will find a sponsored child who can learn from your skills.
- As an educational sponsor, you can expect a flexible volunteer position: you and your sponsored child decide how often and for how long you meet with your sponsored child.
- You will meet other educational sponsors at regular sponsorship meetings, activities and events such as the summer party or the Christmas party.
- Before starting a sponsorship, we will consider together which sponsored child is right for you. In our introductory seminar, you will be well prepared for your role as an educational mentor. Supervision and further training are also always available to you.
Our experience shows that educational mentors take around 1 year. However, there is no minimum or maximum duration. It can be as long or as short as you both want. A sponsorship can also be terminated if you no longer need support or if you no longer have time for professional or other reasons.
Very different. For example, doing homework together, studying for an exam, having a job interview or looking for an internship.
Theimportant thing is that you come to an agreement.
As a rule, you study together for a school subject that is causing difficulties. What you do can change at any time. Of course, you can also go out for ice cream or do other leisure activities.
We organize activities and creative activities at our sponsorship meetings. We have also taken city trips and excursions with our sponsored children and educational sponsors. We are always open to your ideas!
Should something not go well, we are always at your disposal. You can reach us by phone, SMS or e-mail. Together we will look for a solution.
In an introductory meeting, we first discuss all the important aspects of the program. We will talk about your strengths and you will be informed about the code of conduct for the prevention of violence.
An extended certificate of good conduct must also be submitted. We will cover the costs for this.
You will take part in an introductory seminar at the start of your voluntary work. This will prepare you for your role and give you the opportunity to exchange ideas with other educational mentors.
