Eltersdorf: Roundabout to replace dilapidated bridge
Stand: 23.05.2025
A level crossing without a bridge is more economical. The conversion is in line with the package of measures adopted by the city council in October 2023 to calm traffic in Eltersdorf.
The plans for the reconstruction of the junction south of Eltersdorf as part of the traffic calming measures for the through road are one step further. The junction of the state road (St) 2242 with the district road ER 5 south of Eltersdorf is to be fundamentally rebuilt. Instead of the badly damaged bridge, which will have to be demolished in the coming years, a traffic circle is planned. The responsible Nuremberg State Building Authority has identified this reconstruction as the most economical and environmentally friendly solution in close consultation with the city administration. A planning sketch has now been presented to the Environment, Transport and Planning Committee (UVPA). The concrete planning for the conversion is set to begin next year. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027.
The background to this is the structural condition of the bridge and the resulting mandatory replacement measures. The most economical solution is to replace it with a level crossing without a bridge structure. This conversion is in line with the package of measures adopted by the city council in October 2023 to calm traffic in Eltersdorf. This was decided because the Eltersdorf bypass to relieve traffic congestion was not feasible.
What exactly is planned?
The planned traffic circle is to be designed in such a way that it directs traffic towards the highway. An additional "bypass" will allow vehicles coming from the south to drive directly to the highway entrance without stopping. In future, anyone wishing to drive to Eltersdorf will have to turn off at the traffic circle and will thus be deliberately guided away from the main direction of traffic - an important contribution to traffic calming in the town.
Bicycle traffic has also been considered: the connection along Eltersdorfer Straße is to be prepared for use as a high-speed bicycle connection as part of the project. The planning concept will be presented to the UVPA again once the plans, which are the responsibility of the Nuremberg State Building Authority, have been further specified.
Background
According to the Nuremberg State Building Authority, the existing bridge over the St 2242 is one of the most severely damaged bridges in the area of responsibility. The new solution enables modern and sustainable traffic routing - both for cars and cyclists.
