Stand: 31.10.2025
Great honor for the research location Erlangen: Lord Mayor Florian Janik received the team from the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS in the town hall on October 27. The team received the prestigious EMMY® Award for Engineering, Science & Technology for the development of the JPEG XS video codec standard.
The EMMY® Award is one of the most important prizes worldwide for outstanding achievements in television and media technology. Mayor Florian Janik: "Erlangen stands for excellence, innovation and cooperation between science and industry - this award is impressive proof of this."
What is the JPEG XS video codec standard?
It enables the transmission of videos in the highest quality and with virtually no delay - a groundbreaking development for film studios, live productions and cloud applications. It was largely developed at Fraunhofer IIS. It has been setting global standards in audio and video technology for decades.
"Our teams at Fraunhofer IIS are known for audio and media technologies that are revolutionizing the way we produce and experience media content today. Our audio codecs, starting with mp3, through the entire AAC family, including our latest xHE-AAC codec, have shaped the global standards and technologies used in almost all consumer electronic devices, computers and cell phones. We are all the more delighted to receive the EMMY Award for the ground-breaking JPEG XS codec for video production workflows. We are proud to welcome the delegation with the EMMY in their hands in October to celebrate the team's achievement together," says Prof. Dr. Bernhard Grill, Institute Director at Fraunhofer IIS.
Erlangen: International center for pioneering developments
At the reception, Lord Mayor Janik praised the institute's outstanding research achievements and its importance for Erlangen as a center of innovation and technology. With its work, Fraunhofer IIS is making a decisive contribution to Erlangen being perceived internationally as a center for pioneering developments.
The city of Erlangen warmly congratulates Fraunhofer IIS on this special award and thanks the institute for its contribution to the international visibility of Erlangen as a center of research and science.
