Erlangen Climate Fund

Stand: 03.02.2026

Member municipalities of the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region can collect donations specifically for local projects. The Erlangen Climate Fund is a platform on which commitment from citizens, associations and companies can flow directly into local sustainable projects.

Erlangen becomes a pilot municipality for a new format within the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region's municipal climate and sustainability fund. The municipal climate fund was established in 2021 to provide financial support to municipalities and associations in the metropolitan region for the implementation of additional non-profit projects in the field of climate protection and sustainability. The funds come entirely from the region - from member municipalities, sponsoring companies and private individuals - and also flow back entirely into regional projects.

Donations for local climate protection

The new "local climate funds" format now gives member municipalities the opportunity to collect donations specifically for local projects. In future, private individuals, associations and companies will be able to invest directly in the future of their municipality. Funded projects will be selected according to the general criteria and processes of the climate fund.

"With the Erlangen Climate Fund, we are creating a platform on which the commitment of citizens, associations and companies can flow directly into sustainable local projects. This makes climate protection in Erlangen even more tangible," explains Sabine Bock, Deputy Chairwoman of the Climate Fund. Initiatives in Erlangen have already been successfully supported in the past - for example a project to reduce anesthetic gases at the university hospital. Funding applications from Erlangen have also already been submitted for 2025.

Many opportunities to get involved

Donations can be made directly via the website(www.unser-klimafonds.de/stadt-erlangen). In addition to traditional bank transfers or PayPal, there are various formats such as

  • Fundraising runs at schools
  • "Donations instead of gifts" for birthdays or anniversaries
  • Greeting cards from 25 euros or
  • the climate cloud, where donors can immortalize themselves with a personal wish for Erlangen.

Companies can also get involved - for example through the "Regional Future Program", which enables donations based on unavoided greenhouse gas emissions. It is also possible to become a supporting member of the climate fund.

Have your own projects funded

Project applications can be submitted by municipalities, associations, initiatives and companies with projects for the common good. Funding is available for additional, non-profit projects that promote climate protection or sustainability. The application deadlines are in spring and fall.

In the past, the funding volume per project was between 2,000 and 12,000 euros. Larger projects were supported via project-related fundraising campaigns with sums of up to 150,000 euros.
