About the institution

State-certified technicians in the fields of electrical engineering, IT technology, mechanical engineering and mechatronics can train to become state-certified medical technicians at the technical academy. The course is free of tuition fees and is offered in part-time form, possibly also in full-time form if there is sufficient demand. The further training is subject to the school supervisory authority of the government of Middle Franconia and ends with a state final examination.

The city of Erlangen is the "City of Health and Medical Technology" due to its high concentration of medical technology expertise. With more than 100 medical technology companies in Erlangen, almost every fourth employee today earns their living in the fields of medical technology and healthcare. The availability of highly qualified specialists is therefore a basic prerequisite for economic competition.

State-certified medical technicians are involved in the development, planning, manufacture and, above all, the sale, assembly, maintenance and support of medical technology devices and systems. They can recognize and rectify faults. They are also responsible for safety inspections and their documentation in accordance with the Medical Device Ordinance.
They can also work in sales, advise customers on the possible uses and benefits of medical technology systems and instruct operating personnel.

In order to underline Erlangen's position as the capital of medical technology and to support the local medical technology companies and businesses with qualified personnel, a municipal academy for medical technology is being set up at the Erlangen Technical College. The technical academy for medical technology awards the qualification "State-certified medical technician". The school will start operating at the beginning of the 2014/15 school year. The school regulations for specialist academies (FakO) apply to the operation.

The further training course lasts 1 year full-time (or 2 years part-time - if there is sufficient demand) and is offered to qualified state-certified technicians or participants with sufficient previous training in the fields of electrical engineering, IT technology, mechanical engineering technology or mechatronics. In addition to the core area of medical technology subjects, the training content also includes medical, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and IT fundamentals. Relevant subjects from previous technician training are taken into account, subjects not yet taught in the specific subject area are offered as compulsory subjects. Individual deficits are compensated for by elective subjects in which supplementary content is offered.

The course is free of tuition fees and is offered in part-time form, possibly also in full-time form if there is sufficient demand. A one-off material allowance is only charged for materials, copies, scripts or shares of software licenses.

The technical college for technicians of the city of Erlangen has a tradition of more than 60 years and has been very successful in training state-certified technicians in the fields of electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and IT technology.
Over 7500 graduates have left the technical school as state-certified technicians. A significant number of them have been promoted to engineering positions and have reached leading positions in middle management in industry.
This success of the technical college is largely due to the high standards set for the students, the intensive supervision, the specialization of the teaching staff and the practical orientation of the training thanks to generously equipped laboratories and the cultivation of company contacts.
