Cemetery Administration

Stand: 21.07.2026

Here you will find information about the responsibilities of the City of Erlangen’s Cemetery Administration:

Gebäude der Friedhofsverwaltung

The Erlangen Cemetery Administration manages the city’s ten cemeteries. The Funeral and Cemetery Services Field Office, established in 1996, handles all matters related to funerals.

To ensure that a funeral proceeds smoothly, the “Registry Office and Cemetery Administration” must be contacted in the event of a death. The death must be reported and registered there. If the deceased is to be buried in a municipal cemetery, the burial must be registered with the Funeral Services Department. The allocation of burial plots and the licensing of service providers also fall within the Cemetery Administration’s area of responsibility.

The Cemetery Services technical department inspects the stability and safety of headstones once a year after the frost season. Grave sites may generally only be erected or modified with written permission from the Cemetery Administration.

Approximately 20 employees care for the 20 hectares of green space across the city’s cemeteries; depending on the season, they enhance the cemeteries’ appearance with various plantings. In doing so, the cemetery is highlighted as a place of remembrance and interaction. To encourage interaction at the cemetery, there are conversation benches at the Central Cemetery. These benches invite people to engage in conversation and are intended to build bridges between generations and cultures.

There are approximately 1,800 trees in the city’s cemeteries that are covered by the Tree Protection Ordinance. These trees are regularly (once a year) inspected and assessed by the City of Erlangen’s tree care department. Any measures identified during these inspections are carried out by the City of Erlangen’s tree care department or by companies contracted by it. Tree pruning of any kind is performed exclusively by the City of Erlangen’s tree care department. Private individuals are not permitted to carry out pruning work.
