Bicycle safety and repair workshop at ASGThe Alterlangen district advisory council supported this school bicycle project | |
---|---|
The Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium used the climate budget for basic bicycle repair equipment such as assembly stands and specialized bicycle tools. In addition, material for bicycle safety training on the school grounds such as pylons and seesaws was purchased. A group of pupils formed through the elective lessons, which gradually took on responsibility for setting up a "bicycle club". The ASG hopes that this cycling club will increase safety awareness for the many cyclists on their way to school, help them to recognize, avoid and repair damage to bicycles on the school grounds and have an overall positive effect on private bicycle use. |
Reactivation of the school garden at Herman Hedenus SchoolThe Alterlangen district advisory council supported this ESD school project | |
---|---|
The pupils at Herman Hedenus elementary school were hard-working gardeners! In fall 2023, the school garden was reactivated. First, the existing raised beds were cleaned and new potting soil and compost were spread, into which spring bloomers were then planted. In spring 2024, further plants were planted, including berry bushes, which could then be harvested and eaten by the 1st and 4th graders in summer 2024. The observed return of bees and other insects to the planted areas was also a great success. |

Dechsendorf elementary school continues the "A school year for the climate" projectThe Dechsendorf local advisory council supported the year-round school campaign | |
---|---|
The 2022/23 school year was once again held under the motto "A school year for the climate". Important environmental and climate issues as well as the 17 ESD goals were the top priorities and have been continued and dealt with intensively since the last school year. All purchases and activities brought the pupils closer to the topics of sustainability, the valuable use of resources, environmental protection and pollution. The school library was expanded to include numerous books on the topics of environmental protection, climate, pollution, ESD goals and sustainability. The gardening club planted potatoes, tomatoes and bee-friendly plants in the school beds, among other things. They also renovated the school's own mini pond in the school garden, which was no longer functional, by planting new oxygenating and flowering plants in it. During a visit to the youth farm in Erlangen, the children were introduced to numerous topics, such as health and nutrition, in workshops. The children were thus able to acquire and expand their knowledge. |

The "Verschenke-Häusle" of the Protestant student communityThe City Center District Advisory Council supported this project, which encourages sustainable consumption | |
---|---|
The idea behind the ESG's "Verschenke-Häusle" is to reuse items that have been given away. The wooden house has been clearly visible on the paved forecourt in front of the ESG building at Hindenburgstraße 46 since June 2023. All kinds of items that are small enough to be stored in the house and are still in good condition can be sorted onto the shelves or placed on the clothes rail. Everyone can take what they like and give the items a second life. This avoids waste and conserves resources. In addition, the pinboard in the Häusle is intended to promote exchange in the neighborhood and become a meeting place. |

Since September 2022, a refrigerator funded by the climate budget has enabled the distribution of refrigerated food in the foodsharing Fairteiler in the Protestant Student Community (ESG). The Fairteiler is a place where anyone can put in or take out food according to the Fairteiler rules. It is therefore also an offer to private individuals to put surplus food in the Fairteiler before it spoils. The Fairteiler is also popular with food rescuers from Erlangen and has already saved a lot of food from the garbage can. The aim is to reduce food waste, which is unacceptable in times of climate change and rising food prices. |
Educational orienteering run through Erlangen's Meilwald forestThe City Center District Advisory Council sponsored an educational project in Erlangen's forests | |
---|---|
The educational orienteering run takes participants on a 5 km route through the Schwabachgrund and Meilwald forests. The participating children and young people use a map and compass to find their way. There are several stations along the route where they can experience nature and take part in cooperative exercises. The aim is to promote cohesion within the group and to develop climate and environmental education topics with a focus on water. The measure was carried out twice in the Brucker Lache with a focus on local history and forest soil with one school class each time and can be booked on an ongoing basis. Either the Brucker Lache or Erlangen's eastern district (Schwabach/ Meilwald) can be chosen as the location. An individual focus on social or nature education topics is possible and desirable. Contact can be made at: klimabudget@stadt.erlangen.de |

Climate-friendly nutrition for young and oldThe District Advisory Council East supported this educational project for families | |
---|---|
Every week for 10 weeks, the Mütter- und Familientreff Erlangen e.V. took a closer look at one aspect of nutrition, from plant-based alternatives and seasonal food to food rescue. The younger guests particularly enjoyed various hands-on activities, such as making their own vegan spreads, coloring organic eggs with natural products and baking delicious climate snacks without factory food. This also led to lively discussions about climate change among the adults, who jointly considered how they could reduce their CO2 emissions, what options there are for shopping without plastic packaging and why they should buy seasonally and regionally. Free stainless steel cans, cooking bags with climate recipes and seasonal calendars were distributed to families, children, young people, pensioners and interested parties with limited financial resources. A sponsored weekly climate breakfast with organic food, information boards and recipes to cook at home rounded off the project. |

A worm farm for the children at the ErdenkindER daycare centerThe District Advisory Council East supported the educational project for the youngest children | ||
---|---|---|
The worm farm is used at the Erdenkinder daycare center to compost organic waste, i.e. fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee and tea bags, etc. As the daycare center cooks its own food, a lot of organic waste is produced. The soil created with the help of the worms is distributed together with the children in the facility's vegetable and herb garden. The liquid that runs off during the composting process, the "worm tea", is used to clean the drainage pipes in an ecological way or to fertilize the plants optimally with the microorganisms it contains. In this way, the children learn about the natural cycle of composting and the associated sustainable aspects while "feeding" the worms. |
Campaigns against litter in RöthelheimparkThe East District Advisory Council sponsored a project against littering | |
---|---|
This campaign in Röthelheimpark used explicit posters to draw public attention to how much garbage harms the environment. Litter, such as carelessly discarded cigarette butts, packaging and broken glass, not only damages the groundwater and the environment in general, but also poses a danger to children playing in the park. The children from a school and a kindergarten in Röthelheimpark were involved in picking up the litter with the garbage tongs purchased from the climate budget and were able to see for themselves where most of the garbage was to be found and what impact it would have if it was simply left lying around. |
FAU Mobility May: Bike check - Bring your bike and get fit for the summerThe District Advisory Council South supported this bicycle project | |
---|---|
As part of "Mobility May", FAU's Green Office organized a wide range of information events and interactive activities on climate-friendly mobility. Among other things, a bicycle safety check was carried out on two days with the support of the inclusive Café Hergricht on Roter Platz at FAU's Faculty of Engineering. This gave interested people the opportunity to have their bikes checked for roadworthiness free of charge and to have minor adjustments carried out, such as adjusting brakes, lubricating chains or changing inner tubes. New book box for children in Erlangen SouthThe South District Advisory Council supported this upcycling idea | |
---|---|
"Help yourself and put something in" - this is the motto of the new book box for children's books in the Sebaldus housing estate in Erlangen. An old, converted telephone box, financed from the climate budget, now invites families to swap used books for children. "We want to promote a love of reading and enthusiasm for the world of books, especially among young people," said Sandra Bendikowski, Chairwoman of the Parents' Council of the Thomizil Children's Center, at the opening on Friday, 13 October 2023. Ulrich Gann, representative of the church council of the St. Thomas parish in Erlangen, added: "Children of all ages are invited to bring and take used books to their heart's content." The new mini-library is a joint project between the parents' council of the Thomizil, the children's center itself and its sponsor, the Thomasgemeinde Erlangen. |
"Walking bus" at the Friedrich Rückert elementary schoolThe South District Advisory Council supported this mobility project for primary school children | |
---|---|
A parents' initiative at Friedrich-Rückert Primary School launched the so-called "Laufbus", which enables schoolchildren to walk to school and home independently. The walking bus route has been running along Schuhstraße since summer 2023 and picks up all schoolchildren on the route at a fixed time. This way, no child has to walk the route alone and parent cabs are not needed! |
The Techfak gardenThe South District Advisory Council supported a university garden project | |
---|---|
Since summer 2022, a group of students and employees of FAU Erlangen have been taking care of 120m² of raised beds and other plant pots on the grounds of Roter Platz at the Faculty of Engineering. A wide variety of vegetables, herbs and berries are grown together on this area. The active gardeners also take care of watering, maintenance and harvesting, thus not only raising awareness of climate protection, the consumer turnaround and species protection, but also creating a near-natural recreation zone for FAU students and staff. |
A public bike service station for FrauenaurachThe Frauenaurach local council supported the installation of the station in Brückenstraße | |
---|---|
Funds from the climate budget were used to purchase and install a bike service station in Frauenaurach. Once the location had been successfully determined, a foundation was laid and the station installed on it. In addition, signs were placed at various intersections in Frauenaurach to make it easier to find the station in Brückenstraße next to the bookcase. The station is now accessible to everyone around the clock and helps to repair small breakdowns on bicycles, baby carriages or wheelchairs. It consists of a holder for a bicycle, a repair kit, various tools and an air pump. |
LED lighting for the fortified church in KriegenbrunnThe Hüttendorf local advisory council supported this energy-saving project | |
---|---|
The fortified church in Kriegenbrunn is an impressive building that attracts many visitors. As the lighting was no longer up to date, some people from Hüttendorf made an effort to find new, energy-efficient light sources, which were installed professionally and on a voluntary basis in the fall of 2023. |

Trees at the Kosbach playground protected from erosionThe Kosbach/Häusling/Steudach local advisory council sponsored a stepped bed at the Kosbach playground | |
---|---|
In recent years, it became apparent that the slope at the playground in Kosbach was threatening to slide down towards the road, putting the trees on it at risk. This has now been secured by a construction project. A two-tiered bed was created to protect the trees standing on it and was planted with additional plants in spring 2023. This measure now prevents the slope from slipping further and the roots of the trees remain in the ground and are not exposed. In addition, rainwater can now seep into the ground better again. Old trees have a much greater climate protection effect than young ones. It is therefore important to take measures that contribute to the preservation of old trees. This stepped bed has preserved a large number of old trees at the Hegenichstraße playground and protected them from erosion and lack of water. |
Sustainably planted flower boxesThe Kriegenbrunn local council supported this biodiversity project | |
---|---|
Gardener Stefan Strasser used the climate budget to sustainably plant flower boxes with permanent perennials and then give them away to interested citizens. The insect feeders, which can bloom all year round, were filled with peat-free Terra Preta and planted with permanent plants. The demand for the insect-friendly flower boxes was huge! |
Around 100 climate protection trees given awayThe Kriegenbrunn local council supported the tree planting project | |
---|---|
Whether in the garden or on the balcony: last year, Erlangen residents had the opportunity to plant their own climate protection tree. Stefan Strasser, ambassador for the European Garden Association - Nature in the Garden International and an organic gardener by trade, gave out climate protection trees for people to plant themselves, which were very well received. All the trees on offer were picked up within a very short time after prior registration and planted in private gardens. Mr. Strasser also offered expert advice to clarify which tree is best suited to which location. The expert was also happy to give tips on how to plant and care for the trees.
