kubic ceremonially opened
Stand: 02.03.2026
With the opening of the kubic cultural and educational campus, Erlangen has gained a new central location for cultural education, encounters and social interaction.
On Saturday, February 28, the kubic in Südliche Stadtmauerstraße was officially inaugurated with a ceremony and a "housewarming party". Numerous guests from urban society, culture, education and politics celebrated the opening of the extensively renovated and expanded building of the former Frankenhof leisure center. In the afternoon, many visitors took the opportunity to take a guided tour of the new premises - including the cooking workshop, the jewelry studio and various group rooms.
General refurbishment and further development with future prospects
With the kubic, the city of Erlangen is building on the long tradition of the Frankenhof and at the same time developing it into a contemporary center for education, culture and encounters. The listed building was extensively renovated and extended between 2018 and 2026. The aim was to create an open, barrier-free and versatile place for all generations.
Today, the kubic brings together central cultural education facilities under one roof: the Erlangen Municipal Singing and Music School, the Erlangen Franco-German Institute, the adult education center, the municipal youth art school and a daycare center. The offer is complemented by event rooms, workshops, rooms for clubs and open meeting areas. Actors from the independent cultural scene will also have a variety of opportunities to present themselves at kubic. There will also be a bistro and hotel, which will be managed by Lebenshilfe. The kubic is a lively place that combines education, culture and social interaction in a special way.

A place of participation and social interaction
In his speech, Lord Mayor Florian Janik emphasized the importance of the new building for urban society: "Our aim was to create a space that is open to everyone. The kubic is a place of accessibility, inclusion and participation. People can come together here, experience culture and education and play an active role in shaping it."
Culture and education officer Anke Steinert-Neuwirth also emphasized the special role of the building: "Today, this place is back in the spirit of its original idea: openness, social interaction and cultural diversity. This building was already a statement when it was built - and it is again today."
Facilities already in operation
Due to recent water damage, event operations are currently still limited. However, the facilities located in the kubic are already working at the new location. The group rooms are expected to be available for use from mid-March.
The ceremony was accompanied by a varied cultural program. Participants included ensembles from the Singing and Music School, contributions from the German-French Institute, the Adult Education Center, the Youth Art School and Lebenshilfe Erlangen, who gave an insight into their work at kubic with musical contributions and video presentations.
The kubic - learn more
The focus is on the idea of a lively house where everyday life and special occasions come together:
- from language courses in the afternoon to
- rehearsals in the evening to
- to a conference at the weekend.
The architecture with an open foyer, a variety of room sizes and attractive outdoor areas supports encounters, transparency and short distances.
The kubic attaches great importance to accessibility: kubic.de has content in plain language, information in sign language and a dedicated page on accessibility. The aim is to make the campus as accessible as possible - for visitors as well as for groups and event organizers.
There is a wide range of cultural and educational activities: Courses, workshops, lectures, concerts, readings, exhibitions, rehearsals and formats for families, children, young people and adults.
Institutions such as the municipal singing and music school, the youth art school, the children's culture office, the culture/health/nutrition program areas of the Erlangen adult education center, the German-French Institute and the German-French KiTa are at home here.
The campus is also suitable as a conference and event venue: whether it's an association meeting, specialist conference, seminar or cultural festival - with professional technology, flexible rooms and in-house catering, the kubic offers the right framework conditions.
The kubic offers rooms of different sizes for education, culture and meetings - from small group rooms and seminar rooms to halls for larger events. The room list on kubic.de provides information on sizes, equipment and possible uses, such as seating options, stage and media technology.
Many rooms can be used flexibly: they are suitable for courses and workshops, rehearsals, presentations, conferences, association or committee meetings and hybrid events. Organizers can request rooms via the service team, receive advice on planning and arrange additional services such as catering or technical equipment.
Under "Service" on kubic.de, you will find bundled information for anyone planning their own event: information on event organization, the room list and staying in the building as a guest. There are also contact options and further details on booking and using the rooms.
The menu item "Tickets" leads to the tickets for events. Concerts, readings and other events can be conveniently booked online.
A separate page on accessibility provides information on access, offers and current measures. It is supplemented by content in plain language and sign language.
The kubic was created through the general renovation and expansion of the former Frankenhof youth center. Step by step, the listed ensemble of buildings was transformed into a modern cultural and educational campus. The aim of the planning was to
- to visibly preserve the historical character of the Frankenhof and
- at the same time to bring it up to today's structural and technical standards.
What was done?
- The existing buildings were extensively renovated
- The buildings along Südliche Stadtmauerstraße were extended and new components added
- A new event hall was built in the inner courtyard and on the site of the former indoor swimming pool
- A new building with a daycare center and other uses was created in the eastern part of the property
- Access, elevators and pathways have been improved.
The campus is now easily accessible and as barrier-free as possible.
The conversion was one of Erlangen's largest urban renewal projects. It has been implemented in several construction phases since 2017. User groups and the neighborhood were involved during the construction period.
