Future Parking on Michael-Vogel-Straße

Stand: 25.06.2026

The introduction of a parking management system is expected to provide 156 managed public parking spaces and three accessible public parking spaces in the future. Implementation is still scheduled for 2026.

At its most recent public meeting, the Building Committee approved the implementation of a parking management system in the parking lot on Michael-Vogel-Straße, located beneath the overpass. With this decision, the city is implementing a key component of the budget consolidation plan adopted in 2025.

Current Parking Situation

Due to its proximity to downtown and the fact that it has been free of charge until now, the parking lot is in high demand. A significant portion of the parking spaces is currently occupied by long-term parkers. With the introduction of parking management,

  • make the parking spaces more widely available to the general public in the future and
  • access to the city center for occasional users will be improved.

The 156 managed parking spaces are expected to generate annual gross revenue of approximately 175,000 euros.

To implement the parking management system, the area under the overpass will be reorganized. The rationale is

  • the previous dual use of the space for public parking and
  • parking spaces for city administration employees.

The previously confusing layout has repeatedly led to incorrect parking in the past, which is why a clear separation of the areas is necessary.

Future Use

As part of the reorganization, the access road to the cemetery will be moved slightly to the west. The existing pedestrian path will remain in place. The current eastern access road will be removed and replaced with additional parking spaces.

In the future, the area will feature

  • 156 managed public parking spaces as well as
  • three accessible public parking spaces.

In addition, there will be 46 parking spaces for city government employees, which will continue to be managed by the Office of Facilities Management.

Three new parking ticket machines will be installed on the south side of the parking lot for payment purposes. These machines accept both cash and cashless payments via card terminal. Payment via smartphone (mobile parking) is also available in the parking lot.

Implementation of this measure is still scheduled for 2026.
